This impressive debut has outpaced the initial success of his 2023 film, Oppenheimer. The movie, featuring a star-studded cast including Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, and Zendaya, is an adaptation of Homer’s timeless Greek epic. It chronicles the perilous 10-year journey of Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, as he strives to return home following the Trojan War.
With a substantial production budget of $250 million, The Odyssey represents Nolan’s most significant box office opening outside his renowned Batman series and his best debut since The Dark Knight Rises in 2012. In North America alone, the film garnered $124.5 million, securing its position as the third-largest opening of the year, trailing only behind Toy Story 5 and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Across the Atlantic, the United Kingdom and Ireland emerged as the strongest international markets, contributing £12.9 million over the film’s first three days. The Odyssey is groundbreaking in its technical execution, being the first feature film shot entirely with IMAX cameras, which offer enhanced clarity and resolution. This ambitious project was showcased in over 12,800 locations and on 26,000 screens globally, including 440 IMAX venues.
