Iran has released Dena Karari, a dual US-Iranian citizen who had been held since December 2024, according to an announcement by US President Donald Trump. In a message posted on Truth Social, Trump described Karari’s release as a gesture of goodwill from Iran, noting that she is now out of the country and in good health.
Jared Genser, Karari’s lawyer, confirmed her safety and stated that she is on her way back to the United States. He attributed her release to the efforts of the Trump administration, which had been working to secure her freedom.
Karari’s detainment began after she traveled to Iran in 2024 to visit her family. However, circumstances took a turn when she was later prohibited from leaving the country. Her situation worsened following the US and Israeli military actions against Iran in 2025, which led to Iranian authorities charging her with espionage.
This development occurs amidst a backdrop of increased tensions between Washington and Tehran. While the release is seen as a positive step, it does not alter the overall strained relations between the two nations. The situation remains delicate, with both sides navigating complex diplomatic challenges.
