Google’s AI-driven glasses return, reshaping tech market dynamics.

On Tuesday, Google unveiled significant enhancements to its search bar, infusing it with advanced artificial intelligence capabilities. This move marks the tech giant’s renewed venture into high-tech eyewear, following the mixed reception of its original glasses over a decade ago. Announced during Google I/O, the company’s annual developer conference, the updated search feature will now handle more complex and conversational queries. This shift encourages users to interact with Google’s chatbot, supported by the newly introduced AI model, Gemini 3.5.

The Gemini model is designed to offer extended text predictions and enhance user interaction, potentially transforming a typical Google search into a more dynamic experience with visual elements. These updates aim to integrate AI more deeply into everyday tasks like creating calendar invites or organizing spreadsheets within Google’s suite of applications. Elizabeth Reid, who leads the Google Search product, described these changes as the most significant in the nearly 30-year history of the service. The updates are being rolled out for both desktop and mobile users globally, presenting a new layout that focuses on AI-generated summaries rather than traditional lists of links, although the classic search option remains available under a “Web” tab.

The introduction of Google Gemini aims to create a “universal assistant” that is both personal and proactive, according to Josh Woodward, who oversees the development of this flagship AI. With 900 million monthly users, Gemini still trails behind ChatGPT’s 900 million weekly users. However, the integration of AI agents into Google’s primary search engine, which serves billions daily, represents a shift from a niche tech domain to a broader consumer market. Subscribers to the AI Pro and Ultra plans will have access to “information agents,” autonomous bots capable of conducting detailed research and providing summaries or actionable plans. Additionally, the Gemini Spark feature will leverage data from Google services like Gmail and Calendar to assist with planning and research tasks.

In collaboration with Samsung and eyewear companies Warby Parker and Gentle Monster, Google introduced a new line of “intelligent eyewear,” set to launch in the fall. These glasses, equipped with voice-command functionality and cameras, are part of Google’s strategy to re-enter the augmented reality market. Meanwhile, Meta has been selling similar technology, partnering with EssilorLuxottica on the Ray-Ban Meta glasses since 2021. Google’s earlier attempt with Google Glass in 2014 faced public ridicule and was discontinued, but shifting consumer attitudes have spurred renewed interest in this tech category. In line with this, Google is also developing a second model of smart glasses with an in-lens display, known as Project Aura.
