The Moody Center in Austin stands as a marvel of modern sports architecture—but now also a monument to alleged corporate misconduct. Tim Leiweke, who once led major franchises and entertainment groups, has been charged with federal crimes tied to its bidding process.

Between 2018 and 2024, Leiweke allegedly engineered an anticompetitive scheme with a competitor, effectively securing the $388 million deal for Oak View Group. With no real competition, OVG’s bid sailed through—and the center opened in 2022.

However, the lack of competitive bids raised eyebrows. Investigators say Legends Hospitality, the competitor, was promised lucrative contracts that never materialized after they exited the bidding.

Now removed from his role, Leiweke could face a decade in prison if convicted. The case is a powerful reminder of the legal and ethical responsibilities facing leaders in billion-dollar industries.
