In a striking display of influence within the Republican party, Donald Trump successfully backed Ed Gallrein, a retired Navy SEAL and farmer, in a primary election against seven-term incumbent Thomas Massie in Kentucky’s fourth congressional district. This election, which took place amid primaries in five other states, was interpreted by Trump allies as a litmus test for dissent within the party. Gallrein’s victory signifies a continuation of Trump’s sway over the Republican base, as Massie, a libertarian-minded conservative, had often clashed with the former president on issues such as military action, government spending, and transparency regarding the Jeffrey Epstein investigation.

Elsewhere, primaries in Georgia and Alabama further underscored the ongoing power struggle within the GOP. In Georgia, the gubernatorial race saw Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones and billionaire Rick Jackson heading to a runoff for the Republican nomination, sidelining Trump critic Brad Raffensperger. The Republican nominee will eventually face former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, who secured the Democratic nomination outright. In Alabama, Trump ally Tommy Tuberville emerged victorious in the Republican primary for governor, while former Senator Doug Jones clinched the Democratic nod.

In Pennsylvania, voters selected nominees for numerous competitive House races pivotal to determining the November election’s majority. Democrats there elevated Chris Rabb, an aggressively anti-establishment candidate, in a primary highlighting the party’s internal struggles. Meanwhile, Trump stirred controversy by endorsing scandal-plagued Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton in a Senate primary runoff against incumbent John Cornyn, causing a rift within the party.

Massie’s loss in Kentucky aligns him with other Republicans like Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger, who faced political backlash due to their opposition to Trump. Over the weekend, Senator Bill Cassidy, who had voted for Trump’s conviction following the January 6 insurrection, lost a primary in Louisiana after Trump endorsed challenger Julia Letlow. Massie, who championed independence and transparency, found his message overshadowed by Trump’s endorsement of Gallrein, who campaigned as a staunch supporter of the former president’s agenda.

The primary contest in Kentucky’s fourth district became the most expensive House primary in history, with $25.6 million spent on advertising according to AdImpact. Gallrein accused Massie of deviating from Trump’s Make America Great Again movement, while Massie contended he was upholding the principles Trump once stood for. Despite his efforts, Massie could not overcome the impact of Trump’s backing in a district deeply influenced by the former president. As Gallrein prepares for the general election, he steps into a district that has not favored a Democrat in two decades. Meanwhile, Trump-backed Andy Barr secured a Republican primary win in Kentucky for the Senate, aiming to succeed retiring Mitch McConnell.
